TOWhat products will help protect your hair from the sun, what hairstyles should you give up in the summer, and why should you wash your hair more often in the summer? Trichologist told BeautyHack about the most common mistakes in hair care in the warm season
Mistake # 1: not protecting your hair from the sun
Summer is a real test for hair. Direct sunlight dries out the protective layer – the lipid impregnation of the hair. Without protection, they become sensitive to any external factors, and this leads to damage to keratin (the protein from which hair is built).
As a result, hair becomes dry, dull, quickly gets tangled and breaks off – add a two-week vacation to the sea here, and rehabilitation without proper care may take up to six months. After all, as you know, sea water dries out hair very much.
Exposure to sunlight also negatively affects the scalp – it can become dry, sensitive and even burn (and this leads to local inflammation), especially in those with thin hair. Let’s not forget that the scalp, like the skin of the face and body, is susceptible to photoaging.
It is most convenient to add sprays, leave-in masks or SPF serums to your cosmetic bag. If you can’t do without styling products, then get light fixing sprays with sunscreen for the summer. But washable products with UV filters are not effective.
Apply products with SPF along the entire length 20 minutes before going out into the sun and follow simple rules: use a hat or umbrella (especially between 11:00 and 16:00), do not sunbathe with wet hair, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water after each bath and reapply sun protection. And don’t comb your wet hair!
Mistake # 2: pulling your hair into a tight bun or ponytail
Tight hairstyles, of course, often help us out in the heat, but they are undesirable at any time of the year, and even more so in summer, since moisture contributes to the stretching of the hair. If we also add here mechanical stretching due to the hairstyle, then the situation is doubly aggravated.
Many people make a bun at night in the summer, thereby causing excessive friction on the pillow – this leads to brittleness. The beloved ponytail can also aggravate hair problems. In general, the consequences of such hairstyles can be very different – from damage to the shaft to traction alopecia (that is, hair loss due to traumatic injury).
Everything is simple here – do not get carried away with tight hairstyles, and if you do not want to give up on them, alternate loose hair and tails with bunches. Do styling that does not cause discomfort and, even more so, soreness while wearing – loose tails, relaxed bunches or braids. Be careful with the choice of hair bands – they should not contain traumatic elements: metal clips, jewelry, and so on. Elastic bands made of soft tissue or silicone work best.
Mistake # 3: forgetting about moisturizers
Sometimes it seems that in summer the hair does not need moisture, because the air is humid, and there is no volume anyway. At the same time, it is impossible to refuse the conditioner and masks in any case. Despite the humidity of the air, warm wind and sun lead to overdrying of the strands and deprive them of moisture (exposure to ultraviolet radiation causes its evaporation).
In this case, it is recommended to use a balm-rinse after each shampooing, and a mask – on average, twice a week.
For hair protection and restoration, choose masks with keratin, hydrolyzed silk, ceramides or oils. If your scalp is very dry, you should not immediately go to the clinic for injections – first try to restore it with products with moisturizing additives (for example, with panthenol). In case of sunburn on the scalp, as directed by a dermatologist, a short course of hormonal lotions or creams may be required.
Mistake # 4: applying styling products to your scalp
Styling products are an additional contamination of the scalp both in winter and in summer. But in the heat, the desire to wash your hair arises more often, so we don’t need additional clogging of the pores. The remains of styling products, sebum (sebum), other external pollution – all this mix ends up in our hair follicles, and directly on the skin itself, it can lead to itching and irritation.

There is no need to be afraid of frequent shampooing, if there is a need for it. In the summertime, I advise you to switch to milder shampoos – especially if you plan to relax at sea. You can use styling products, but the main thing is to wash them off in a timely manner. Do not “keep” them on your hair for more than 8-12 hours – then the risk of the above negative factors will significantly decrease.
Mistake # 5: swimming in the sea or pool with dry hair
Not everyone thinks about why you need to wet your hair before bathing. The sea water washes away the lipid impregnation of the hair, as a result of which it becomes brittle, unruly and dull. While swimming in chlorinated pool water, our skin and hair suffer from a harmful “cocktail” of phosphates, bleach, calcium and magnesium salts.
If we pre-wet the hair, in this case the scales will adhere more tightly to each other, which means that it will be more difficult for the listed components to get to the internal structures of the hair.
If you still forgot to wet your hair with fresh water and bathed in the sea or the pool, use shampoo for deep cleansing (however, do not get carried away with it on vacation). And don’t forget to apply a moisturizing conditioner afterwards. Such shampoos reveal hair scales, so combing and styling can cause problems – the curls will be naughty. That is why it is recommended to finish washing with a moisturizer.
In addition to all of the above, do not forget about general support for the body: drink enough water, do not forget to eat protein products (this is very important for hair), if necessary, and after consulting a doctor, take supplements with antioxidants, amino acids and trace elements.
